Occupational Therapy focuses on helping people increase independent function and enhance development in all areas of their daily life (e.g., home, work, community). Occupational therapists believe that occupations describe who you are and how you feel about yourself. If you are unable to do the things you want, or need to do, to live and to enjoy your life, then your general well being may be affected.
Occupational therapists work with people of any age to promote health, prevent disability, and develop or maintain abilities. Occupations can include self-care (i.e. personal care, mobility), leisure (i.e. social activities, sports) and productivity (play, school, employment, homemaking). Occupational therapy provides the skills for the job of living and solves the problems that interfere with people’s ability to do the activities or occupations that are important to them. We help people maximize function and live life to the fullest!
Our occupational therapists see clients in hospital, at home, at work and in the community. Services provided by our occupational therapists include:
Our occupational therapists visit the client at the hospital and communicate with the hospital team to understand the client’s current medical status and prognosis and determine his/her current level of function with activities of daily living. Often, they will visit the client’s home to complete an environmental assessment to identify any safety concerns.
Occupational Therapists assist with safe and successful discharge from hospital by making recommendations where appropriate for:
- Activities of daily living that the client can complete independently.
- Activities of daily living that the client will require assistance with to complete.
- Assistive devices, equipment, or home modifications required for client’s safety, pain management and/or to promote independence with activities of daily living.
- Alternate discharge destinations if it is unsafe for client to return home.
This assessment comprehensively assesses the client's functional abilities at home, work or in community through the use of standardized assessments to provide objective measures of abilities, as well as completing a thorough functional assessment, which considers abilities as well as compensatory strategies. Our assessments are holistic and assess the person's physical, cognitive and psychological strengths and limitations. We analyze activities that the person needs or wants to complete. We evaluate the environment in which activities need to be completed.
Our comprehensive assessment makes recommendations where appropriate for:
-
Activities that our client can completely independently and which activities require assistance. Modifications to activities are made where appropriate.
-
Prescription of assistive devices, equipment, or home modifications required for safety, pain management and/or to promote independence with activities.
-
OT Programs to remediate or compensate for identified limitations in physical, cognitive or psychosocial abilities.
A comprehensive functional assessment of a client's ability to participate in personal care activities and the need for assistance with these activities. Report includes completion of relevant forms (e.g.; Form 1, ADLS Form).
Our funcational cognitive assessment evaluates the core cognitive abilities (over 25 skills) required for performing functional activities through the use of objective and functional testing. Understanding the client’s specific limitations allows us to make the most effective recommendations for intervention.
This assessment also complements any neuropsychological assessment previously completed as it provides a clearer picture of the client’s ability to function in their own environment and allows for use of any learned compensatory strategies. Behavioural, physical, and psychosocial abilities are also assessed.
This assessment comprehensively evaluates a client’s current physical and/or cognitive-behavioural abilities to determine whether there is match between the client’s abilities and their previous/potential job. It not only provides an assessment of the client’s physical abilities to complete a job, but also their functional cognitive-behavioural abilities that impact their ability to complete a job.
Our therapists are skilled in developing rehabilitation and return to ADL programs that specifically address barriers from a physical, psychosocial, cognitive and/or environmental perspective. Programs are goal oriented, related to pre-injury/pre-illness activities, and tracked daily by the client. Day-to-day activities are used as therapy whenever possible to promote meaningful progress.
Our programs at home include:
- Return to personal care
- Return to housekeeping/ home maintenance
- Return to caregiving
- Cognitive Remediation
Our community reintegration programs address:
- Accessing the community (Transportation)
- Engaging in sport and leisure activities
- Interacting with people working in the community
- Interacting with friends and family in the community
We assess whether assistive technology is therapeutically indicated and whether it will improve a person's ability to function and participate in life activities. We determine whether a mainstream device is appropriate (like smartphones or tablets) or whether a more specialize device is needed. After making a recommendation, OTs and our Assistive Technology Consultant can implement the recmomendation, assist with set-up and provide any needed training.
